Arimastu tie-dyeing

Arimatsu in Aichi Prefecture not only preserves remnants of the historic Tokaido Route but also stands as the birthplace of Arimatsu Shibori, a tie-dyeing craft with a rich history spanning over 400 years.

While Japan has a longstanding tradition of shibori tie-dyeing, the artisans of Arimatsu have elevated and refined the art into a sophisticated and decorative process. Using guide patterns, these skilled craftsmen employ special stands and metal hooks to meticulously align the countless repetitive, knotted-off loop sections, resulting in intricate and complex patterns. This meticulous approach showcases the dedication and artistry embedded in the Arimatsu Shibori craft.
